MAY 15TH, 1941. 351 SERVICE AVIATION (Continued; pp h playing football and had run to the crash cladonly in his football kit. Together they attempted to extricate the onlyremaining member of the aircraft. To assist them in their efforts, a foam apparatus was turneddirectly on them. Although petrol and oil tanks, ammunition and Verey lights were exploding.Flying Officer Hobinson and Corporal Taylor per- sisted in their efforts and finally extricated thebody. Both displayed great courage and a com- plete disregard for their own safety, and althoughboth Buffered from the effects of the foam sprayed on them it undoubtedly saved them irom beinggravely burned. On a previous occasion Flying Officer Robinson displayed the greatest couragein attempting to rescue the members of a burning aircraft, in spite of exploding bombs and am-munition. L.A/O. G. A. HUTCHINSON.—During a fire in atop-6torey room at a Royal Air Force station, one day in February, 1941, L.A/C. Hutchinson succeededin getting on to the roof and then climbed along f*\e side of the wall, getting down on to a staek-pipe, from which he assisted a number of occu- ants to. safety. Thinking the room was clear,he had started to get down himself when another airman appeared at the window, badly burned andwith his clothing on fire. This airman got on to the window-ledge and locked his arms roundthe window frame, *but. owing to his dazed con- dition, he could not, or would not, let go L.A/C. Hutehinson, realising the airman's posi-tion, and showing complete disregard for his own safety, climbed back on to the window ledge andtried to beat out the flames on the airman's tunic, but he was unsuccessful in doing this. Hemanaged to get the airman away, however, by forcing him to release his grip on the windowframe; by this time the room was a mass of names. L.A/C. Hutchinson faced great danger fromburning and from the collapse of the building, and exhibited bravery of a high order in return-ing for the final rescue. Unfortunately, the air- man whom he rescued has since died. BRITISH EMPIBE MEDAL. Fit Sgt. A. S. J. CUETIS. Cpl. W. Hooo, R.A.F.V.R.Fit. Sgt. Curtis was engaged in supervising the unloading of live bombs from a lorry, unawarethat they had previously formed part of the bomb load of a damaged aircraft. During the processa bomb exploded, immediately killing a number of airmen and setting fire to the vehicle. Fit.Sgt. Curtis and Cpl. Hogg unhesitatingly ap- proached the blazing vehicle and. with great per-sonal courage, removed the bodies of the dead airmen. L.A/C. (now Corporal) C. J. Kiss.A/C.l G. GIIX. A/C.I F. HiKDLEV.One day in December. 1940. a training aircraft crashed, burst into flames an8 was burnt outin a few minutes. The passenger was thrown clear but died from his injuries. The pilot, whowas badly injured, was pinned in the burning wreckage, but was extricated by the gallant effortsof these three airmen, who. in so doing, un- doubtedly saved his life. : London Qazette • Royal Air Force Air Ministry.May 2, 1941.
