Sea^airmanship NO. 1 S.F.T.S. of the Royal Australian Air Forceat Point Cook, Port Phillip Bay, near Mel-bourne, bolds a sailing regatta on Wednesday of each week. Dinghies of the 12-foot plass are thestandard craft. Many of the men now at Point Cook will laterbe posted to seaplane or flying boat squadrons. A man who has learned to handle a racing 12-footer in a tideway and a fresh breeze feels at homo when his aircraft comes down on open water.Seamanship as well as airmanship is required in this branch of the Service. Dinghy racing is atonce a pleasant and a sound way of acquiring sea sense. New Air Crew Ranks SOME details are now available of the qualifica-tions and rates of pay for the new air crew promotions.Air crews to be promoted under the new scheme will be required to have served on air crew dutyin the next lower rank for at least six months. The basic rates of pay are 15s. a day for FlightSergeants (15s. 6d. after four years), and 16s. 6d. a day for Warrant Officers. Higher ranks are alsoto be open to the signals and gunnery members of air crews. These are wireless operator (airgunner), radio operator (air) and air gunners. To all three categories the rank of Flight Sergeant will now be open. Pay rates for wireless operator (air gunner) and radio operator (air)in their new rank of Flight Sergeant will be 9s. a day; for air gunner the pay is 8s. a day. Act. Sqn. Ldr. M. H. BROWN, D.F.C., No. 1Squadron.—This officer has commanded the Squad- ron with outstanding success. He has destroyeda further two enemy aircraft, bringing his total , victories to at least 18. His splendid leadershipand dauntless spirit have been largely instrumental • in maintaining a high standard of efficiencythroughout the squadron. Aitf. Sqn. Ldr. L. V. E. ATKINSON, D.F.C., No.|U-";iuadron.—In April, 1941, this officer led a -JrmdUoti in an attack on a large and stronglyftcorted enemy convoy. Despite intense antiair- "cut fire from the escorting vessels, San. Ldr.Atkinson delivered his attack on the largest mer- chant vessel, scoring two direct hits on the stern?f the ship. The formation, which had followed jn to attack, completed a decisive action in whichthree or four ships were set on fire and left in l sinking condition. Sqn. Ldr. Atkinson displayedgreat courage and tactical ability throughout the entire operation. He has completed numerousOt>jra'.i?na' missions and has displayed iu'dership and efficiency of the highest order. Overheu were (he pilot andobserver respectively in an aircraft which par- ticipated in an attack on a large enemy envoy.In the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire, Sgt. Leavers displayed great determination and tactical ability,which enabled Sgt. Overheu to score two direct hits on a large ship. Ju March, 1941, these air-men successfully attacked an enemy destroyer which wa6 escorting a convoy of some 13 ships.Pressing home his attack from an extremely low level, Sgt. Leavers machine gunned the deck,while Sgt. Overheu scored two direct hits on the destroyer, with his bombs. These airmen havecompleted many operaticnal missions and both have displayed outstanding team work, togetherwith great courage and determination.
