viii. Advertisements FLIGHT AUGUST 7TH, 1941 The globular lodestone with a short piece of iron wire attached to a pivot in the centre C with which Gilbert demon- strated how to determine the poles A and B. THE WORK GOES ON TT'NOWLEDGE of the magnetic attraction ot the poles •^-is accredited to the Norwegians as far back as the eleventh century and was undoubtedly used by them as an aid to navigation. To William Gilbert, however, we owe most of our knowledge of the behaviour of the compass. He has been described as " The greatest English experimentalist in magnetism and electricity " and has left us the results of his experiments and researches in a lengthy treatise entitled " De Magnete " published in 1600. Queen Elizabeth took great interest in his work, and in the painting reproduced above Gilbert can be seen demonstrating the magnetic needle mounted upon a globular lodestone. To-day research and experiment are assiduously continued in the Pullin organization and Gilbert would certainly be astonished were he to see some of the latest developments produced by this company and would be proud, as we are, to feel that this work is contributing in no small measure to the magnificent achievements daily performed by our Fighting Forces.
