io Advertisements. FLIGHT JANUARY IST, 1942. gy THE MAJOR ON PROVERBS Marooned overnight recently at a small wayside hotel, we searched the 'library' for something to read. Of the score or so books the majority were the familiar tattered thrillers but standing alone was a^ large volume, handsomely bound, \\ and bearing the title " If Crab No VsS^ Crawls". We puzzled over this, '-^5* gave up, and then found it was the beginning of a Negro proverb, "If Crab no crawls he no see nottin"—picturesque but inaccurate, like most proverbs. Take the one abcut necessity being the mother of invention. Many discoveries are.the result of oversights or accidents (blotting paper is a classic example); a few, like the thermionic valve^ are fundamental; the remainder are logical developments. It is illogical that a petrol or oil filter should have inlet and outlet connections in fixed positions. This means that amongst all the intricate complexities of a modern aircraft the pipes must be so arranged as to be offered accurately to the filter — maybe at the sacrifice of vital space. It is therefore a logical development fsr the inlet and outlet connections of a filter to be capable of being set at any angle. There are 360 "in a circle; there are at least 360 angular positions for the inlet and outlet connections. This is a feature of the Aircraftings oil and petrol filters which has solved many a headache in the Drawing Office and saved many an hour on the assembly line. We do not grace this simple development with the title of an "invention". Only those who have tried fitting an intractable pipe to a connection slightly off the centre line can appreciate how much this facility of angular adjustment contributes to the ease of making a petrol-tight joint. Olives on the skew can be the very devil. Thus, as with the ' slipper' operated petrol - cocks, this Aircraftings feature in filters means — "Ease with Security". " If Olive no Fit, she no hold petrol" is as good a proverb as any! fuel Systems for Aircraft «c.
