- vi. Advertisements FLIGHT JANUARY IST, 1942. Orford Castle . . Reputed to be Henry II's pet Castle. The reason—it was an experiment and a successful one. Henry seems to have been the' first to realise that the angle of a tower was most vulnerable to assault by undermining. ' To offset this danger he visualised 12-sided or 8-sided towers ; Orford was the outcome. It was designed by the Royal architect Alnoth, circa 1165 ; Alnoth, by the way, had a permanent salary of yd. a day and carried out a lot of work for Henry II on the Tower of London and the Palace of Westminster. Functional design in the past was limited by the character of building materials available—to-day, with steely there is much more freedom for both purpose and expression in design.
