84 FLIGHT JANUARY 22ND, 1942 SERVICE AVIATION The hand-held camera used by the U.S. Nav^air patrols operating from bases in Newfoundland. The Americans use a reducing lens type of sight, whereas we prefer an 'arrangement of crossed wires. Aii Sgt P. J. ERASMUS, S.A.A.F., No. 12 Squadron.—This airman has carried out many operational sorties in East Africa and the Western Desert. Entirel.v by his own initiative, he ijualilied from air gunner to observer, and as such lie has proved to be one of the most reliable of observers. He has always shown courage ami determination. Sgt. E. FERGUSON, NO. 7 Squadron.—This air-man was the flight engineer of an aircraft which rarried out a low-level attack on enemy shipping one day in December, 1941. By well-directed shooting he silenced a gun on an armed ship. The aircraft was hit by the enemy's cannon fire and sustained damage to the fuselage, the rear turret and tail chassis and the inter-communicatibn equipment. Sgt. Fergtrson cleared the rear turret and attempted to repair the inter-communication system, but, finding it impossible to effect even a temporary repair, he went forward and rendered first aid to the air observer, who had been wounded. Thereafter, Sgt. Ferguson rendered valu able service to hjs captain by acting as messenger. Throughout, this airman exhibited a fine example of discipline and teamwork. On several occasions he haB displayed great skill and has thus con tributed materially to the safe return of his air craft. Sgt. B. F. MOONEY and Sgt. 1. J. PHILIP, both of No. 236 Squadron In December 1941, Sets. Mooney and Philip were the pilot and wireless operator-observer le- spectively of an aircraft which carried out an important daylight reconnaissance. Defying heavy defences, Sgt. Mooney flew over the objec tive at a low altitude and most satisfactory results were obtained. Some days later these airnum volunteered to carry out a daylight recon naissance of another objective and much valuable information was secured. Sgts. Mooney and Philip have executed many operational missions skilfully and efficiently. THE KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards: — GEORGE MEDAL. L.A/C. H. MILLER.—In August, 1941, an air craft returning from a sortie over France landed at a home base. Unknown to the pilot, three bombs which were thought to have been released remained in the aircraft and were detached on landing, one exploding and the others falling a short distance away. The aircraft soon became a blazing inferno, amid which bullets were explod ing. The pilot and two of the crew managed to get out and tried to extricate the observer from the front part of the aircraft, but were unable to"~do so. L.A/C. Miller the driver of the fire tender which arrived shortly after the crash, then took over the rescue operations, cutting away the front part of the aircraft and succeeding in extricating the observer, regardless of the fact that bombs were lying nearby and others might have been in the aircraft. Unfortunately the observer was found to have been killed when th» first bomb exploded. L.A/C. G. WILLIAMS. A/C-l K. BLAND. In June, 1941, ammunition in an aircraft ex ploded by spontaneous combustion. In spite ol the explosions, A/C. Bland climbed on to the mainplane and unfastened the gun panels. By this time the ammunition tank was burning fiercely, so he released it from the gun. L.A/C. Williams carried away the burning tank, which started to explode while he was carrying it. The presence of mind and courage shown by these two airmen undoubtedly saved the aircraft and prob ably the lives of the air crews and armourers who were emptying the remaining ammunition tanks.
