MARCH 12TH, 1942 AVIATION floes. P/O. Elisor attacked the leading ship from mast heigh I and scored direct hi 15 with some of bis bombs. Whilst taking violent evasive action, at an ex tremely low altitude, the aircraft struck a rock which disabled the starboard engine, rendered all instruments and the turret unserviceable, and extinguished all the lights. Thus handicapped. P/O. Ensor skilfully regained height in a heavy snowstorm, but later, whilst flying over land and uncertain of his bearings, his aircraft was sub jected to anti-aircraft fire and searchlight activity for some 30 minutes. Eventually, the position was identified and, ably assisted by Sgt. Paige's excellent navigation, P/O. Ensor flew across the sea with only one engine of, his aircraft functioning. On reaching thi> qptmtry be was compelled to attempt a forced iM^in^ "owing to shortage of petrol and, although it was snowing heavily, assisted by Sgt. Paige, who fired Very lights in quick succession in an endeavour to illuminate his surroundings, P/O. Ensor made a safe landing without further damage to the aircraft or injury to the crew. Throughout this officer showed great courage, skill and tenacity ami was greatly assisted by the coolness and efficiency of Sgt.' Paige. GEORGE MEDAL. THE KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the George Medal to the undermentioned airman: — Cpl. E. G. DUHANT. In November, 1941, an aircraft caught fire, and one of its bombs exploded. Cpl. Durant led the fire tender party to the scene after the first ex plosion, knowing full well that further explosions could be expected from the remaining bombs. On reaching the blazing aircraft, Dpi Durant ob served an injured airman lying near the wreckage and, assisted*by another airman, promptly dragged him clear. Whilst carrying the injured airman to the com parative safety of the fire tender, they were twice hurled to the ground by the force of the explosion from two further bombs. Leaving the injured air man to the care of the medical orderly in' charge of the ambulance, Cpl. Durant led a party to the other side of the aircraft, whence he had heard a cry for help, and helped to extricate another c;mtalty from the fire. Throughout, Cpl. Durant displayed fine leader ship and complete disregard of his own safety, and with the assistance of another airman was cndoubtedly responsible for saving the life of rne of the occupants of the blazing aircraft. Unfor tunately, the second occupant, who wag rescued subsequently, died of his injuries. Guests of Vichy.
