APRIL 2ND, 1942 FLIGHT Advertisements. 13 Kirby Muxloe Castle . . . Fire artillery first appeared in this country about 1325. Its future very soon impressed military experts, and by the end of the 14th century most of the new structures were being built with a view to artillery defence. In England, the construction of strictly military strongholds had practically ceased by that time, but the influence of artillery develop ment was to be seen throughout the 15th century in the design of the great manor houses of the period. Kirby Muxloe, built 1474, is an example. It had circular gun ports at the base of each of its square angle towers. The history of building is a record of change and of ultimate improve ment. Conditions actuated development, design and new materials made it possible. The spirit of progress is design ; the fact of progress is the establishment of design with good materials, by men who take pride in their work.
