APPTL 23RD, 1942 Thirty-fifth of the Second Series FRIEND or FOE ? British and German Floatplanes : Seafox and Ar 95-See FLIGHT 407 FAIREY SEAFOX: Low aspect - ratio fin and rudder of typically Fairey design. Almost rectangular tail- plane with " bite '' in trailing - edge. f : there is any consolation in our backwardness in the development of Naval torpedo aircraft, it is that the Germans are no better off in this particular department, and the Arado Ar 95-See, is still in general uce over the North Sea and the Baltic. The Fairey Seafox, which resembles the Arado Ar 95-See in many respects, a straight, inclined leading-edge and a small, round apex which blends into a continuously curved trailing-edge. The Seafox rudder projects beyond the divided elevators and comes well down to form (in side view) a slight bulge below the base-line of the fuse lage, but the Arado rudder sits atop the fuselage, its "heel" curving in to the base of the fin on top of the tail- plane. The Arado elevator is a one- piece surface projecting well astern of both rudder and fuselage. In plan, the Seafox tailplane has a slight taper to both edges and flat tips with slightly rounded corners, its ele vators having a V shaped "bite""for rudder clearance. The tailplane of the Arado, which is of high aspect-ratio, has a backswept leading-edge with projecting horn balances to its large area elevator, and a perfectly straight trailing-edge rs ^two-seater reconnaissance catapult aircraft and was first delivered to cruisers in 1938. It was a Seafox which was largely responsible for the defeat of the Graf Spee by its fine work in spotting for the guns. Although the Arado has a radial engine and the Sea fox an " H"- shaped Napier Rapier engine, the two air craft closely resemble each other in wing plan and general dimen sions, but are easily distinguishable from cistern view by their tail groups. The Seafox has a typically Fairey fin and rudder—not unlike that of the familiar Swordfish—which is of low aspect-ratio and has a convexly curved leading-edge and a broad, rounded apex, while the German floatplane has a high aspect-ratio fin and rudder with Next week: Vanguard and F.W. 190.
