Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm News and Announcements Awards Immediate Awards for Malta Fighter Pilots FIVE of the fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force who have taken part in the great de fence of Malta have received immediate awards: — BAR TO THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS. Act. Sqn. Ldr. A. II. BARTON. D.F.U., receives a bar to his Distinguished Flying Cro.-s. His score since he came to Malta- is five and a half enemy aircraft destroyed, three probably de stroyed and two damaged. He has always been determined to kill, and by his example he has ^* ,'ely created a magnificent offensive spirit in his ^•^tadron. In one engagement he destroyed two Me. 109s and often he has led the way directly into enemy bomber formations, taking no account of their fighters. Art. Fit. Lt. J. A. PLAGIS D.F.C.. who has destroyed ten enemy fighter aircraft over Malta, probably destroyed two and a quarter, and dam aged four and a half. Two R.E.2001s were de stroyed by him in single combat on June 6. some forty miles out over the sea, when he led four •spitfires unhesitatingly against more than ten Italian fighters. DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS. P/O. -A. P. GOLDSMITH. D.F.M.—Of eleven enemy aircraft that have fallen to him, he has destroyed six since his award of the D.F.M. He took part in the fighter escort during an attack on a convoy on June 5. and in the space.of ten minutes destroyed two enemy aircraft and proiably a third. P.O. J. H. BISLEY.—His sore over Malta is five enemy aircraft destroyed. He chaseel enemy bom-, hers all the way back to Sicily on April 5 and destroyed two of them. Then he was himself at tacked by their fighter escort, antl despite severe wounds inpde a succesful crash landing at his Malta base. P/O. M. A. GRAVES led a fighter squadron in an attack on rive Italian bombers on May 9. Although the bombers had a strong fighter escort they were all shot down. P/O. Graves has been 1 operating unceasingly since March 21 and has ao- r^onnted for three enemy aircraft destroyed, five probably destroyed and many damaged. Pilot Lt. Col.
