324 FLIGHT SEPTEMBER 17TH, 1041 SERVICE AVIATION tents were scattered in the rear of the aircraft. One of the bombs became ignited, getting a further ('fie alight and rilling the aircraft with sparks and smoke. With bis bare hands Set. McLennan picked up one of the blazing bombs and endeavoured to throw it out through the escape hatch. He was unable to open the hatch, but with great pre sence of roind he pushed the burning bomb through the fabric of the fuselage. In spite of burns to his hands, lie picked up the remain ing bomb and disposed of it in a similar manner. By liis prompt and courageous action this air man averted an extremely serious situation. Fit. Sgt. P. J". GATEHOUSE, NO. 248 Sqn.—One evening in August, 1942 an attack by a forma tion of our aircraft was made on two air dromes in Sardinia. Fit. Sgt. Gatehouse who was the navigator of the leading aircraft, skil fully navigated the formation to the target, which was reached exactly at the right time to deliver a telling attack. A large number of hostile aircraft on the; ground were destroyed and damaged. The safe return of his aircraft, in- mlving a flight of some 400 miles at night, was accomplished mainly as a result ol his accurate work. During the next day his aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters on five occasions, hui his cool directions enabled his pilot to evade the attacker each time. Fit. Sgt. Gatehouse has displayed great gallantry and devotion to duty. Fit. 8gt. R. C. GLEW, SO. 277 Sqn.—Fit. Sgt. Glew served in the campaign in France, where he flew with great distinction. Since his return to this country he has completed many rescue • patrols, and the aircraft in which he has flown, as air gunner and observer, have been instru mental in saving 17 members of air crews from the "sea. On one occasion he participated ia the rescue of five of the crew of a bomber, near the French coast, whilst under fire from the shore defences. This airmen has displayed great keen ness and devotion to duty. * rpHE KING has been graciously pleased to X approve the following awards: — AIR FORCE CROSS. Wine ('dr. T. F. V. LANG. Wine (Mr. Q. F.
