FLIGHT JANUARY 14TH, 1943 Aircraft of the Anglo-American Forces Review of British and US. Types in Operational Service ' rFHlS is the second instalment of an alphabetical list of some 70 different types of aircraft of British and American manufacture, the first 18 of which were given in last week's issue. DAKOTA DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT CO., INC., U.S.A. Twin-enginedtransport 111 service with the R.A.F. and the U.S. Army, to whom it is kncwn as the C47. It is a military version of thehighly successful DC 3 passenger airlinei and is powered by two 1,200 h.p. Pratt and Whitney Twin-Wasp R-1830-SIC3-G air-cooled radial engines The main cabin is provided with a la/ge loading door to pass bulky packages (such as spare engines).When required as a troop carrier it may be fatted with folding benches to accommodate 18 airborne or parachute troops.All-metal construction, except for control surfaces, is em- ployed. Top speed is 230 m.p.h. at 8,500 feet, service ceiling23,200 feet, and cruising range at 200 m.p.g., 2,125 miles. Dimensions: Span 95 ft., length 64 ft. 6 in., height 17 ft., wingarea 987 sq. ft DAUNTLESSD OUGLAS AIRCRAFT CO., INC., U.S.A. Two-seater dive-bomber in service with the K.A.F., the U.S. Army Air Force as the A 24 and the U.S. Navy as the SBP3. TheDauntless is powered by a 950 h.p. Wright Cyclone GR-1820- 32, nine-cylindei, air-cooled radial engine, and its top speedis reported to be 275 m.p h. at 7,500 feet. It is of duralumin construction throughout aud has a flush-riveted, stressed-skincovering; the flaps, which are perforated, split to fold up and down and act as dive-btakes. Full armament details arenot available, but the U.S. types have two synchronised o.5oin. machine guns firing through the airsciew disc. Dimensions:Span 41 ft. 6 in., length 31 ft. 9 in., height 13 ft., wing area 335 sq. ft. DEFIANTB OULTON-PAUL AIRCRAFT, LTD., GT. BRITAIN. Two-seater fighter in service with the R.A.F. Originally powered* by a 1,030 h.p. Rolls Royce Merlin II, but later typesof Merlin havu subsequently been employed ; top speed is BOW more than 300 m.p.h The Defiant is notable for its arma-ment, which is concentrated in a Doulton-Paul power-operated Jour-gun turret amidships, no forward-firing wing guns fitted.All-metal- construction with flush-riveted stressed-skin is em- ployed ; the fuselage is monocoque and the wings are a twq-sparstructure with split trailing-edge flaps. The deck fairing behind the turret retracts to allow lull traverse. Dimensions: Span39 ft. 4 in., length 35 ft. 4 in., height 11 ft. 4 in., wing area 250 sq. ft. DEVASTATORD OUGLAS AIRCRAFT CO., INC., U.S.A. Three-seatertorpedo-bomber in service with the U.S. Navy, with whom its official designation is TBD 1. Powered by a 825 h.p. Prattand Whitney Twin-Wasp Junior air-cooled radial engine, its top speed is 225 m.p.h. at 9,000 feet. The Devastator carries a21 in. torpedo in a recess under the fuselage, but is not totally enclosed as its nose projects; a bomb-load may alternatively beearned. Defensive armament is limited to one synchronised 0.300 in. machine-gun above the engine cowling and a free0.500 in. gun in the rear cockpit. Undercarriage retracts back- wards and the skin of the wing outer panels is corrugated. Itsrange is 985 miles at 180 m.p.h. Dimensions: Span 50 ft., length 35 ft. 6.in., height 18 ft. 1 in.
