74 FLIGHT JANUARY 2IST, 1943 AIRCRAFT OF THE ANGLO-AMERICAN FORCES MITCHELL NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, INC., U.S.A. Twin-engined medium bomber in service with the R.A.F. and the U.S. Army Air Force, in whose lists it is the B-25C.Powered by a pair of 1,700 h.p. Wright Cyclone two-row GR-2600 air-cooled radial engines, the Mitchell has a top speedof approximately 300 m.p.h., a service ceiling of 26,500ft., and a cruising range of 1,728 miles at 256 m.p.h. Its armamentincludes a power-operated multi-gun turret on top of the fuselage, a retracting turret beneath and one or more forward-firing guns; its normal crew is five. A distinctive feature is that the mid wings are gulled, the out panels being set at asmall anhedral angle. Dimensions :^ Span 67ft. 6in., length 51ft. .yn., height 14ft. iojin., wing area 610 sq. ft. MOHAWK /^URTISS-WRIGHT CORP., U.S.A. Single-seater fighter^—' ordered in large numbers for the R.A.F. early in the war, and even earlier by the FreTich, it was a development of theU.S. Army Air Force P-36A, since superseded. The power plant is a 1,200 h.p. nine-cylinder Wright Cyclone R-1820-G205Aengine, which gives it a top speed of 325 m.p.h. ; its service ceiling is 32,700ft. Constructed of aluminium alloy, withsmooth Alclad skin, the fuselage is of the monocoque type. Undercarriage retracts backwards on the usual Curtiss prin-ciple, and the tailwheel is also retractable. Various com- binations of fuselage and wing guns were employed; wingracks for light bombs were also provided. Dimensions: Span 37ft. 4in., length 28ft. ioin., height 9ft. 3m., wing area 236sq. ft. MUSTANGN ORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, INC. Single-seater fighterin service with the Army Co-operation Command of the R.A.F. and with the U.S. Army Air Force as the P-51; themakers themselves call it the Apache. Powered by a 1,150 h.p. Allison V-1710-F3R liquid-cooled 12-cylinder "V" typeengine; top speed about 370 m.p.h. at 15,000ft. High-speed reconnaissance and low-level attack are its chief duties in theR.A.F. All-metal construction, monocoque fuselage carries single radiator below corkpit. Square-cut wing tips and alarge angular fin and rudder. Armament comprises 0.5m. and 0.303m. machine guns in the fuselage and wings. Dimensions:Span 37ft., length 32ft. 2in., height 11ft. 8in., wing area 235-75 sq. ft. NOMAD AJORTHROP AIRCRAFT INC., U.S.A. Two-seater dive-J-^l bomber in service with the Fleet Air Arm, the U.S. Army Air Force as the Northrop A-17A, and the U.S. Navy as theBT-i. Its makers' designation was 8A-3P, and from it was developed the DB-84. Poweied by a 1,050 h.p. Pratt andWhitney Twin-Wasp; top speed 260 m.p.h., cruising range about 900 miles. It carries a bomb load of i^Soolb., and itsdefensive armament consists of four fixed machine guns in the wings, and either one or a pair of free machine guns inthe rear cockpit. All-metal, stressed-skin construction. Dimen- sions: Span 47ft. loin., length 32ft. 5in., height 9ft. gin.,wing area approximately 362 sq. ft. • ROC BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, LTD., Great Britain. Two-seaterfighter supplied to the Fleet Air Arm for operation with aircraft carriers. Though not now very much in evidence,the Roc shared with the Defiant the distinction of being the only other single-engined two-seater fighter with a power-operated, four-gun turret. It was produced in both seaplane and landplane versions, the only difference, of course, beingthe substitution of floats for the wheeled undercarriage, and on the latter the provision ot deck arrester-gear. Poweredby a 905 h.p. Bristol Perseus XII nine-cylinder, sleeve-valve," air-cooled radial engine; top speed about same as Skua.Dimensions: Span 46ft., length 35ft. 7m., height 12ft. iin.
