JUNE 3RD, 1943 FLIGHT 593 IiU aircraft was repeatedly attacked by theenemy fighters, he refused to be beaten off until his task was accomplished. .Sgt. H. J. B. CANTER, and Sgt. H. 0. ROBERT-SON, both of No. 76 Sqn.— In December. 1942. Sgts. Canter and Robertson were navigator andwireless operator respectively of an aircraft en gaged on an operational'flight. In hazardouscircumstances their exemplary conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the R.A.F.Bgt. J. COUGHLAN, No. 166 Sqn.—This airman has completed 68 sorties. On one occasion, whendetailed to attack Hamburg, he accomplished his task successfully in spite of extremely adverseweather. More recently, in an attack on Stuttgart, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire whilsttaking a photograph after bombing the target. A shell, which penetrated the bomb doors,destroyed the flying instruments. In spite of this, Sgt. CouEhlan flew the aircraft home. Sgt. E. J. GROVES, NO. 192 Sqn.—As wirelessoperator, this airman has participated in 43 operations, many of them of an important nature.By his skill, often m difficult circumstances, Sgt. Groves has contributed materially to thesuccesses achieved. Sgt, G. F. WHITWELI.. R.N.Z.A.F.. No. 487(N.Z.) Sqn.—In April, 1943, this airman was the pilot of one of a formation of bombers whichattacked railway installations at Malines. Whilst making his bombing run, Sgt. Whitweli wasseverely wounded in the left arm by shrapnel, sustaining a compound fracture Undaunted, heremained at the controls and executed a success- ful attack. AlthouRh in great pain and Buffer-ing from loss of blood, Sgt. Whitwell flew the bomber back to this country, making a landingat an airfield near the coast. Fit. Sgt. R. W. B. BLANCHARD, NO. 10 Sqn.—Early in his operational career, the aircraft in which Fit. Sgt, Blanchard was flying as air-bomber struck a house while taking off. The crew only just managed to get clear before both theairciaft and its bombs exploded. In spite of this harassing experience, Fit. Sgt. Blanchardhas continued to operate .with unrtiminisbed en- thusiasm, and on many occasions -has taken overair-bomber's duties in an emergency. On one of his four flights to Essen, after the aircraft hadbeen repeatedly illuminated by searchlights and forced down over the target, the bombing runwas finally accomplished.
