One of the special " Wedding Ring " Wellingtons used to combat Germany's secret weapon—the magnetic sea-mine. The ring isan electro-magnet which explodes the mines when flown low over the channels in which they lie. The ring weighs 2 tons and is energised by a Vee 8 Ford engine in the fuselage. Wing Cdr. A. WAEBUBTON, D.S.O., D.F.C, No. 683 Sqn.—This officer has undertaken a verylarge number of reconnaissance flights over a wide range of targets in the Middle East theatre. Onone occasion in December, 1942, he made a low- level flight over Naples and achieved success inthe fare of heavy anti-aircraft fire and fighter opposition. Wing Cdr. Warburton's great courageand devotion to duty were well illustrated during a reconnaissance of Pantellaria in May, . 1943.Although his aircraft was continuously subjected to fire from the coastal batteries, he skilfullyaccomplished his task securing information of the highest importance. Distinguished Service Order Act. 8qn. Ldr. P. J. CUNDY, D.F.C.. No. 224 Sqn.—Since being awarded the D.F.C. thiB officer has been almost continuously engaged on operations.In February, .1943, during an anti-submarine patrol he executed two attacks on U-boats. Dur-ing a flight in July, 1342, Sqn. Ldr. Cundy sighted a tl-boat. In spite of heavy opposing firefrom the vessel, which damaged his aircraft and disabled one engine, he pressed home two vigorousattacks, straddling the LT-boat with his depth charges. Afterwards a large, patch of oil appearedon the surface of the water. Fit,. Lt. A. J. HODGKINSON. D.F.C.. No. 23 Sqn.— This officer has completed much operational flying. Latterly, in the Middle East, he has attacked targets in Tunisia, Italy and Sicily, and.during these operations, he has attacked .numer- ous locomotives to good effect, while fires havebeen started in railway iuBtallationt and Billing a« a result ui his determined work. No. 460 (R.A.A.F.I Sqn.—Since being awardedthe D.F.C. this officer has taken part in numerous sorties, including a flight to Turin, which wa*successfully attacked and photographed. Do a recent occasion his fearlessness and promptitudewere instrumental in saving an aircraft from destruction when it caught fire on the ground.Although the bomber was fully loaded and smoke was pouring from it. Wing Cdr. Martin leaptaboard and directed the efforts of the fire fighters in quelling the outbreak. Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross Act. Wing Cdr. P. G. ST, O'BBIAN, D.F.C.—Wing Cdr. O'Brian hag completed a large number of sorties and has invariably displayed greatkeenness. On one occasion, when he had to aban don his aircraft over the sea, he was subsequent! >adrift in his dinghy for eight hours before beinsi rescued.
