niQVIT JANUARY 13TH, 1944 The design of SLEEVE VALVES The advantages of a single sleeve type of valve as used in " Bristol " engines reflect directly upon engine perform ance and reliability. For example, on" Bristol " sleeve-valve engines the combustion chambers are perfectly symmetrical; thereby eliminating hot-spots and the likelihood of pre- ignition. Turbulence is controlled and gas-flow is less restricted by virtue of larger effective port areas and better opening and closing diagrams. Owing to the excellent breath ing qualities of the sleeve-valve high boost pressures are not necessary although higher compression ratios with lean mixtures are used. This ensures improved economy and more power, and definitely reduces the risk of fire, because of lower exhaust manifold and cylinder-head temperatures. Incidentally, this drop in cylinder temperature prevents hot-lead corrosion; whilst cold corrosion is eliminated because the cylinder walls are completely lubricated by the sleeve. Timing, too, is positively determined and the usual periodical valve inspection and adjustment routine so necessary with other engines is entirely eliminated. Couple such advantages to the marked reduction in the number of working parts which is characteristic of " Bristol " sleeve valve engines, and you will understand why the single sleeve is the most efficient type of valve today. 4b0 E.
