4ME. SLEEVES The replacement of SLEEVE VALVES Very few spares are required on a " Bristol " sleeve-valve engine because of the complete absence of cams, tappets and rocker mechanism. As a matter of fact*each cylinder unit of a " Bristol " sleeve-valve engine only has ten coPw ponents and that includes the actual sleeve. Compare s•• **" with the valve spares required for the cylinder unit of an ordinary engine; then remember that a " Bristol " sleeve- valve is not subjected to all the stresses and shocks of an ordinary valve and therefore its working life is Infinitely longer. Obviously the reduction in the number of working parts and therefore the question of spares is one of the out standing advantages of "Bristol" sleeve-valve engines; but consider ease of replacement. When a "Bristol" sleeve-valve is renewed, it is only a matter of placing the ball-joint on the sleeve operating crank and sliding the sleeve down over the piston. After the ball-joint is secured to the sleeve operating- band replacement is complete.
