Appointments A IR VICE-MARSHAL R. D. OXLAND, C.B., C.B.E., now fills a special appointment in Bomber Command. He has been senior Air Staff Officer at Headquarters Bomber Command since February, 1943. Previously he was commanding a bomber group. Air Vice-Marshal H. S. P. WALMSLEY, C.B.E.. M.C., D.F.C., who has been Air Officer command ing a bomber group for two years and had served previously at Headquarters Bomber Command on air staif training duties, is now Senior Air Staff Officer Bomber Command. When the present- war began he was given command of a R.A.F. wing in France and since 1939 has been four times mentioned in despatches. ir Comdre. J. A. GKAY, C.B.E.. D.F.C., G.M.. to be Air Officer commanding a group in iomber Command and to be Acting Air Vice-Marshal. Air Vice-Marshal Gray has been in com mand of a base since December, having for about, eight months before been Deputy Senior Air Statf Officer at Bomber Command Headquarters. Sqn. Ldr. Sqn. Ldr. J. 8AXE, D.S.O., R.C.A.F., No. 35 Sqn.—One night in December, 1943, this officer was the pilot of an aircraft detailed to attack a target in Germany. Although heavy cloud pre vailed over the target, Sqn. Ldr. Sale displayed great persistence and made five runs over the area before releasing his bombs. The return flight was safely accomplished, but, whilst over base at a height of 1,500 feet, some stores exploded and flames burst out near the rear turret and the underside of one o! the wings. The aircraii quickly became filled with smoke and fumes and the fire spread rapidly. The danger of the tanks exploding was soon apparent. Coolly, Sqn. Ldr. Sale turned away from the airfield, regained height au^ ordered his crew to leave by parachute. By tbjp time, he could hardly see the instruments as the smoke in the cockpit was so dense. As he was just about to leave the aircraft himself, Sqn. Ldr. Sale saw, standing beside him, a mem ber of the crew who had been unable to leave as liis parachute was badly damaged and urr.'s.ibt-. some stores were bla: got clear. His accuracy and as a navigator have led to tho success-letion of many sorties. He has always outstanding keenness and aothi operations and has contributed much to the success attained by the Squadron. Act. Sqn. Ldr. J. F. C. GALLAUER. D.F.C.. R.A.F.V.R., No. 105 Sqn.-Throiighoiit a. v«Q large number of operational missions, Sqn. Ldr. Callaher has shown a high standard of reliability and skill. He is a remarkably cool and able navi gator, who has always attained great success in lis operational tasks. Sqn. Lor. Gallahor ha-, always accomplished his tasks with the utmost courage and tenacity. Act. Sqn. Ldr. M. D. S. Hoon. D.F.C., R.A.F.O.—This officer received the D.F.C, in May, 1941. and up to the time of recommendation had completed a large number of operational sorties involving many hours flying. During his second operational tour he carried out consumption and range tests in photographic reconnaissance air craft, from which much valuable information was obtained. Sqn. Ldr. Hood has shown determina tion, skill and method in all his work and Im proved an excellent leader, showing a fine example to other numbers of his flight. Ho .completed his second opeiational tour in July, 1948, and is now a member of a training unit. Act. Sqn. Ldr. O. L. MANDENO, D.F.C.. R.A.F.V.R.. No. 156 Sqn.—Sqn. Ldr. Mandeuo has completed a very largo number of operational sorties. Since the award of the D.F.C. ho has par ticipated in attacks on Hanover, Modane and ljeipzig. Five of his recent sorties have be^n attacks on Berlin, where he achieve,! moat satis factory results in a responsible role. Distinguished Flying Cross Ace. P/O.
