BLILT by Boeing, Beech and Ford as well as by its designers, the Waco Aircraft Co., the CG-4A is the standard trans port-glider of the U.S.A.A.F. and is also in service with the R.A.F. under the British name of Hadrian and, significantly enough, was first used to invade Sicily. It carries 15 armed troops, or a jeep with crew of four can be driven in via the nose section which hinges upwards. Molybdenum steel tubes are used for the luselage and wood for the wings, all being fabric covered. Main wheels of normal landing gear can be dropped. High aspect-ratfe wings and tail- plane of similar plan have parallel edges and raked tips, the wings being braced by Vee struts. Dimensions: Span 83ft. 8in., length 48ft. 8in., height 15ft. 4m., wing area 900 sq. ft. ' V DESIGNED by the German Institute of Sailflying, the D.F.S. 230 is about the cleanest of enemy transport gliders encountered in action and was first used for the invasion of Crete. Carrying only nine men, it was reported to have been used in trains of up to six behind a Ju52/3zm transport tug. Its fuselage is mixed steel tube and wooden construction with plywood and fabric covering, and the wings are strut-braced wooden structures with stressed plywood skin. "Spoilers" are fitted to the upper wing surfaces as well as normal flaps. The high aspect-ratio tapered-wings £.nd deep, narrow, slab- sided fuselage should prevent any confusion with current Allied gliders; fin and rudder are tall" and taper only slightly to a blunt apex. Small tailplane is set ahead of fin and tapers mainly on leading edge. Dimensions: Span 72ft. 4in., length 37ft-, height 9ft. 4in., wing area 410 sq. ft. D.F.S.-230.
