672 FLIGHT JUNE 22ND, 1944 THE CASE FOR THE RAILWAYS Their offer is made on file assumption that they should not have to compete with any air lines, British or foreign- owned, to which subsidies are granted, fn other words, no favours, all to be treated alike. They operate' under Acts which give the Secretary of State for Air unique control, as he may at any time hold an enquiry if it is suggested that the railways are not exer cising their air powers properly. The results'of this enquiry can be reported to Parliament. This is a control to which no other operating company is subjected and the railways have no quarrel with it. We have always been willing to co-operate with others In the same line of business as ourselves and have offered air partnership with, for example, short-distance shipping lines which ran regular services between this country and the Continent, and which have valuable experience to offer to air transport. This co-operation already exists btlfeveen us and shipping lines such as Coast Lines, Ltd., Isle of Man Steam Packet Co., etc. Finally, I want to emphasise that the vast resources and experience of the railway companies which have been inter ested in road, shipping and air as well as electric, steam and diesel rail transport for so long, together with their network of agencies, will enable them to offer unrivalled service to future commercial flying. We shall have a first- rate team of men brought up and trained in aviation to run the service. We already have Mr. D. H. Handover, lately traffic director of B.O.A.C., and Imperial Airways, as air adviser to the railways ; Wing-Commander A. H. Measures, late of Imperial Airways, as superintendent; Captain G. P. Olley as his deputy, and Wing-Commander Lord Amherst, now with the R.A.F.
