JULY 2OTH, 1944 FLIGHT 37 FRONT GUNNER'S GIFT : A ME410 turns away after attacking a U.S. Fortress over Brux. It appears to have a 37 mm cannon under the fuselage. *^*-~ WAR The Oil Offensive : RommeVs Difficulties in Normandy p, and Berlin Repeatedly Bomhed : The Pacific Situc TLCTICALLY the main interest of late has been the unrelenting air attacks on the communica tions behind the German rear in northern France. Strategically, apart from the wonderful successes of the Russians, the main feature has i>een the Allied air attack on the enemy's oil supplies in all quarters of Hitler's European fortress. Tn the history of the air war since 1939 the estimated importance of oil as a target has jumped up and down like the saw-backed temperature chart of a fever patient. At times there Have been concentrated attacks on synthetic plants, refineries, and storage tanks, and authorities have proclaimed that this fluid was the Achilles' heel of Ger many and they were aiming at it with the highest expectations. Then, apparently, hopes of producing much effect by these tactics began to fade, and oil disappeared from the head- fines. German heavy industries took* its place. But every now and again oil would bob up again as a major target for a time. Now, however, in what is clearly the beginning of the last phase of the war with Germany, the British and American author ities have evidently made up their minds quite definitely that it is time to put forth a great effort to cut off the Germans' supplies of oil. The decision seems to date from the series of attacks on Ploesti. One-third of all £he enemy's supplies of refined oil came from that part of Rumania, Uncamouflaged Marau ders of the French Air Force operating over Italian front.
