AUGUST I7TH, i944. c. • 11 returned safely to base M 111 A tribute . . . gained the hard way ... to the characteristic reliability of " Bristol " engines and aircraftsmanship. The illustration shows the badly damaged " Hercules " engine of a Beaufighter after participation in a rocket attack against enemy shipping in the Heligoland Bight. Fouling a ship's balloon cable was the probable cause. The cowling has been torn off and the mounting severely buckled, canting the engine upwards and outwards. Despite this terrific damage, the " Hercules " engine functioned perfectly throughout the homeward journey of 250 miles . . . and the Beaufighter returned safely to base. PlV- w !" hn«'1""1.
