JANUARY IITH, 1945 FLIGHT CONTROL CONSIDERATIONS is still the normal means of control. Full use of the spoiler has not yet been made in any production aircraft—and somewhere there may be the final answer. I am of opinion that, just as the time is ripe for a new philosophy before any further real progress by the human race is possible, the moment is coming for a complete change in all our ideas of aerodynamic design—and moments usually produce the men. So the problems may solve themselves; any new conception will automatically result in a change of ideas through the entire aircraft. Even the few experiments which have been made with the tailless type of aircraft have caused some fairly startling alterations in control systems as they have been applied to the experiments in question. Monsieur Bleriot has had his day, and ailerons, elevators, rudders and the rest of it may soon go to join the conventional airframe in the science museums of the world. The whole thing, too, has beep built round the internal-combustion reciprocating engine, and it begins to look as if this last will eventually be largely replaced by a more direct means of propulsion essentially suited to aircraft. And the new prime mover will need a very new kind of airframe. Development seems to have reached its peak along conventional lines and, even if there has to be a long period of ortnparative stagnation before the change-over, the mojerent and the man will arrive. * " INDICATOR."
