In July, 1944, he was detailed to lead a formation of aircraft in an attack ona flying bomb. site. On approaching the target in- tense and accurate fire was encountered and, al-though his aircraft sustained severe damage, Wing Odr. Connolly flew a straight course and bombedhis objective accurately. His high courage and de- termination on this occasion contributed much tothe success achieved in the attack. Fit. Lt. R. F. C. GARVKY, D.F.C.. J.'.A.F., NO.541 Sqn.—This officer has completed numerous" reconnaissance sorties, setting an example. <>i great, courage and devotion t-o duty. In October, 1944, he was detailed to obtain photographs oi a certainobjective. After completing his phoUxigruphic runs Fit. Lt. Garvey noticed two enemy lightersbehind him. Their leader opened fire. Fit. Lt. Garvey spiralled almost to ground level, pullingout of his dive at the last moment. His aitaeker, who had followed him clown, dived into a woodand burst into flames. This incident is charac- teristic of the skill and determination consistentlydisplayed by this officer. Wing Cdr. N. J. STARK, D.F.C., R.A.F.O., No.60S Sqn.—Since the award of the D.F.O. Wing Cdr. Starr has flown on numerous operational sortiesand has destroyed one flying bomb over the sea. In July, 1944, during an a:r combat he de-stroyed one enemy aircraft, bringing his victories to at least two enemy aircraft destroyed in theair and two on the ground. An excellent squad- ron commander, ho has a distinguished record ofoperational flying. During the period of his com- mand the squadron has destroyed at least 18enemy aircraft while over enemy territory and damaged many others. In addition, they havedestroyed 68 flying bombs, by night. Act. Sqn. Ldr. R. I. A. SMITH. D.F.C., If.C.A.F.,No. 401 (R.C.A.F.) Sqn. -Since Ix-ing awarded the D.F.C., Sqn. Ldr. Smith has completed numeroussorties againat the enemy. In four days he achieved the remarkable feat of destroying sevenenemy aircraft. As Squadron Commander Ihis officer led 412 Squadron on six missions in threedays during which period it destroyed 27 enemy aircraft and damaged nine others. This wasaccomplished during the enemy's persistent efforts to destroy bridges in the Arnhern and Nijmcgeuarea which were vital to oar ground forces. Fit. Lt. G. W. JOHNSON, D.F.C., R.C.A.F. No. 401(R.C.A.F.) Sqn.—Since being awarded the D.F.C. Fit. Lt. Johnson has continued his attacks againstthe enemy with great success. On two recent occasions while he was leading his squadron largeformations of enemy aircraft were engaged. Owing to his fine leadership five en^nay aircraft weredestroyed and two were damaged. Fit. Lt. John- son has destroyed three and damaged one enemyaircraft. In addition be lias destroyed a large number of enemy mechanical transport vehicles,often in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire. Fit. Lt. Johnson continues to display outstandingcourage and coolness in the face o! danger. Fit. T.t. n C. LAtiBMAS, D.F.C.. K.C.A.F., No.412 (li.C.A.F.) Sqn.—Since being awarded the D.F.C. Fit. Lt. Latlbman has completed manysorties against the enemy, lie continues Hi show tenacity of spirit and outstanding courage in theface of overwhelming odds. Fit. Lt. Laubmau has led his flight with such ability that they haveaccounted for 16 out of 26 enemy aircraft destroyed by his squadron, and be was responsiblefor the destruction of eight and the damaging of two in three days, bringing his total to. thirteenenemy aircraft destroyed and two dajuag+H1.. This officer's squadron was outnumbered by the enemyon all three occasions, but with undaunted courage and determination they successfully broke up re-peated enemy attempts to destroy bridges vital to our ground forces in the Arnhem and Nijmegenarea. Act. Son. Ldr. M. J. O.IY. D.F.C.. R.A.F.V.R..N'o. 2 Sqn.- This officer has displayed outstanding ability and zeal. He is a gallant and forcefulleader, whose personal example has contributed materially to the high standard of efficiency ofihe squadron which has obtained much suee'ess. He has commanded the squadron for some months,during which period the formation has completed many sorties, involving reconnaissances and attackson radio buildings and flyiffg bomb sites. Sqn. Ldr. Gray has taken part in many of theseassignments. Act. Fit. I.t. C. 1' MCDOXALB. D.F.C'., O.F.M..U.C.A.F., No. 83 Sqn.-Flt. T,t. McDonald is a vi;ry experienced captain of aircraft who has consistently maintained a high standard of skill.resokiUon and tireless'devotion to duly. He has completed numerous sorties • which have includedattacks on many important targets. Despite set- .backs. he has continued to show undiminishedkeenness to operate and coolness and courage in the air which are worthy of the highest prsiwse.In April, 1944. he was shot dpwn into the sea, but rejoined his squadron, and on his first sortiewas forced to abandon his aircraft by parachute, when he sustained a broken ankle. Again lierejoined his squadron. In May, 1944, he par- ticipated in au attack on A targe! in France.Fit. Lt. McDonald circled the target at a very low altitude in t lie face of peisUuiu fighteropposition. He displayed superb ii irnifln>hij) in controlling his aircraft despite the intense blasteffect of many exploding bombs. F/O. R. G. I'KIDDAT, D.F.C. R.C.A.F., No. 429(R.C.A.F.) Ban.—F/O. 1'ridday is an rxrrllenl flight engineer. Since the award of the D.F.C.. liecompleted a ^second tour of oper-ttions. during which he lias completed many attacks on heavilydefended targets in Germany. On several envi- sions- his skill and resotuee have largelj eoiuributed to the prevention of attacks by ene!n> night fighters. At all times he has displa\clqualities of courage aud determination of a veil high order. Sqn. Ldr. W. A. ClIltlSTENSEN. D.F.C.. U.A.A.F.,No. 10S Sqn.—Since the award of the D.F.C.. Sqn. Ldr Christensen has participated in many opeiational missions. This officer's exemplary courage and cool initiative in t'he most hazardous citcurustances, combined with his efficiency and de- votion to duty, merit the highest pra'ie. Act. Sqn. Ldr. II. J. BARKER, D.F.C., R.A.A.F.,No. 139 Sqn.—Sqn. Ldr. Barker is an cmstanding navigator who has always shown the utmost keen-ness to operate against the eneni . lie has par- ticipated in many sorties over a wide range oftargets, including fifteen missions to Berlin. His enthusiasm, skill and devotion to duty have beenmost praiseworthy. Act. Sqn. Ldr. D. C. DIXON, D.F.C., R.A.A.F..No. 105 Sqn.—Since the award of the D.F.C.. this officer has taken part in many more operationalsorties He has continued to display outstanding courage, ability and tenacity of purpose. Act. Sqn. Ldr. L. C. J4COBE, D.F.C., R.A.A.F.,No. 109 Sqn.—Since the award of the D.F.C., Sqn. Ldr. Jtitobo continued to show outstanding ekilius ,i pilot. He has completed two tours of oper- ational duty, during which he has participatedin attacks on many of the most difficult and heavily defended targets in Germany. His keen-ness, reliability and devotion to duty have been most praiseworthy.Act. Sqn. Ldi. It. C. WISEMAN, D.F.C.. I!.A.A.I1., No. 156 Sqn.—This officer has completed numeroussorties against a wide variety of targets. Fit. Lt. C. \V. J. FALKIXDER, D.F.C., R.A.A.F.,No. 109 Sqn.—I'll. Lt. Falkinder has completed numerous sorties both in heavy bombers and Mosquito aircraft against a wide variety of targets. He has proved himself a navigator of great skill,efficiency and devotion to duty. Act. Wing Cdr. S. BAKER, D.S.O., D.F.C .R.A.F.V.R.. No. 7 Sqn.—Wing Cdr. Baker is on his third operntional tour. -He bus completed alarge number of sorties and has operated many times against tome of the most heavily defendedtargets.
