Groom copyright reserved stone or Wood Man has always liked to warm himself before the fire, but It is not so very long ago — considering his age—that he took his fire indoors, allowing the smoke to find its way up to a hole in the roof. In the 12 th century, fireplaces were built into the wall, and the smoke was carried away by a flue; later, when the house became a home rather than a stronghold, decoration of the fire surround became more refined in its detail, and in the 18th century some exquisite work was being done. Here are two examples: one in carved stone, from a house in ahrewsbury : one in carved pine- wood, from Carrington Souse, Vvhitehall. Both are influenced by the classical orders, but the interpretation varies, just as to-day we all follow the broad traditions ^—mu^trade —— yet add something of character and distinction.
