HERCULES JC.4... Stirling The " Stirling " was the first of the large four-engined bombers to go into service with the R.A.F. They went into action for the first time on the night of February ioth, 1941, subsequently playing a major part in the retaliatory bombing of enemy territory during the crucial days when Britain suffered under concentrated attack of the Luftwaffe. The " Stirling " to-day continues to give valuable service as a training aircraft and more recently has been used successfully for glider-towing. It is powered by four " Bristol " Hercules sleeve-valve engines, giving further support to the assertion that the single sleeve-valve will, be the principle behind the power of large civil aircraft too. «_V>fc9 sUiiade THE BRISTOL AEROPLANE 'OMPANY LIMITED > n 8 a a H > nx 00 H O I/'
