352 FLIGHT MARCH 29TH, 1945 SERVICE AVIATION ol the explosion. The two rescuers were ablsfinally to extricate the injured airman Irom his apparently hopeless position and, with the helpof others." he was passed to. safety. Within two minutes oi the rescue (he whole of the engineroom was ablaze. The courage and initiative displayed by Fit. Lt. Furueaux and Cpl. Bernin dangerous circumstances were worthy of high praise. Act W/0. P MAQUIEE, R.A.F., B.A.F. Regt.—During an air raid on a forward airfield one even- ing in October, 1944, an en^my bomb fell veryclose to a heavy motor vehicle, setting it on fire. The vehicle was laden with au emergencyreserve supply of H.E. and A.P. ammunition The light from the fire was very considerable andinvit&l farther attack by the enemy. In view of tHe danger to which the whole airfield wasexposed it was decided that an attempt ahoultl be made to get the fire under control. Althoughthe ammunition on the vehicle was continually exploding and the absence of cover made anyapproach extremely dangerous, W/O Maguire and SgL Brown together voluntarily took the foamhose to within five yards of the fire and soon extinguished the flames. Both these airmen suf-fered burns on the hand* as a result of their actions. Lt K. LAWLOP, S.A.A.F. B.E.M. (Mil.) L.A/CW. K. JL MCKINLAY, W.A.A.F., No. 961Sqn.— One day in 1944, during the course of one hour, some 50 shells fell in the Dover area anddamage and casualties were sustained at the squadron's headquarters; the medical officer waskilled. L.A/CW McKinlay, a motor driver, al- though wounded in the right hand and leftthigh, acted as ambulance driver and succeeded in removing all the casualties. Thi3 necessitatedseyeral journeys under shell fire to an E.M S. hospital some one and a half miles away. Itwas not until the shell fire had ceased and all casualties had received attention that L.A/CW.McKinlay could be persuaded to have her own injnries attended to.Opl. K. BERRY.
