DESCDLES Snnierland The " Sunderland "—virtually a military version of the "Empire" Flying Boat—has been in continuous service since the outbreak of war. Apart from normal patrol, reconnaissance, convoy protection, and anti-submarine activity, many outstanding and unusual feats have distinguished its war-time record. The "Sunderland" has sunk and damaged many U-boats; rescued hundreds of survivors of torpedoed ships; brought to safety hundreds of persons during evacuation from Norway, Greece and Crete. " Bristol" engines have always been associated with the " Sunderland," and the latest of this famous series of Flying-Boats—" Sunderland IV "—-is powered by "Bristol" Hercules sleeve valve engines.
