380 SERVICE AVIATION enabled the aircraft to weather the remaining 70miles to safe anchorage. Cpl. H. V. FLOOK, R.C.A.F.—One night in Sep-tember, 1944, Gpl. Flook, an aero engine mecha- nic, was on duty in a hangar when a Halifaxaircraft crashed into some nearby workshops. The aircraft immediately burst into flames and theheat became intense. Cpl. Flook, together with ether airmen, ran to tire scene 0!' t'h« er»«U. Bynow the ammunition in the aircraft was exploding and M.T. vehicles tn the vicinity were catchingfire. As Cpl. Plook approached the burning air- craft a member of the crew came stumbling fromthe wreckage. His upper clothing was on fire. Cpl. Flook tore oH the airman's burning clothes, wrapped his own tunic aronnd him and pasted him to some other helpers. Then, seeing anothermember of the crew struggling amongst the wreckage, he ran to his assistance. After somedifficulty Cpl. Flook extricated the airman, tore off his burning garments and led him away tosafety, just before the petrol tanks exploded. In the face of great danger Opl. Flook displayed out-standing courage and set an inspiring example to all L.A/C. J. W. BUTTON. K.A.F., So. 240 Sqn.-In January. 1944, L.A/C. Button was serving as a marine fitter on a pier when an explosionoccurred on board a refueller, containing 2,000 gallons of aviation spirit, berthed alongside.L.A/'C. Button observed an airman who was un- conscious and lying in the cockpit of the craft, which was enveloped in flames. Without hesita- tion he immersed himself in the water in orderto wet his clothing and then, despite the grave possibility of a major explosion occurring, heforced his way through the fierce flames into the cockpit of the refueller and dragged the airmanto safety. _By his outstanding determination* and complete disregard ior his personal safety, L.A/C.Button was instrumental in saving the life of a comrade Roll of Honour Catualty Communique .Vo. 485.T HE Air Ministry regrets to announce thefollowing casualties on various dates.
