iv. Advertisements FLIGHT MAY IOTH, 1945 Smiths of England MILESTONES SERIES No. 2 Ledger Record of Speedometer Sale to King Edward VII. A Smith has played midwife at the birth of many a great invention. The urge to create, experiment and explore seems to be innate in the Smith family, of which Sir Allan Gordon-Smith has, by his enterprise, proved himself a worthy scion. The repeal, in 1896, of the preposterous law which had made it compulsory for a mechanically propelled vehicle to be preceded by a man walking with a red flag, encouraged the development of the petrol motor. Sir Allan, who had served his time with the Swiss clockmaking industry and joined his father's firm, clearly foresaw the significance of this progress, and in 1904, after many months of work and research, introduced a speed indicator specially for motor car use. So successful was this instrument that Sir Allan himself had the honour of selling the first to His late Majesty King Edward VII. Since then the Royal Family, almost without exception, has used " Smith " instruments, and Royal Warrants have accordingly been held. f S.
