His keen-ness to engage the enemy was well in evidence on •:e occasion in January, 1945. when, on returning. base at the completion of a reconnaissance, lit.1 iw the airfield was being attacked 'by a large force1 enemy aircraft. • Sqn. Ldr. Wonnacott imtnedi- •ly engaged the enemy. Before all his amrmini-1- was expended, this resolute pilot had destroyed ree of the attacking force. NEWTON, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R.. botti of 604 Sqn.As pilot and observer respectively, Fit. Lts Foster and Newton have completed, a very largenumber of sorties. They have set a' fine example of courage and determination and have destroyedeight enemy aircraft, successes which are an ex- cellent testimony to their great skill and co-operation. Fit. Lt. Newton has shared in the destruction of one more enemy aircraft, which wasshot down when he was flying with another pilot. Act. Wing Cdr. D. M. WALBOUEN. D.S.O., D.F.C.,R.A.F.V.R.,. 17 Sqn.—In December, 1944, Wing Cdr. Walbourn piloted an aircraft in an attackon the railway sidings at Coblenz. On,the out- ward journey the starboard engine began to vibratebadly and had to be put out of action. Despits the loss of engine power, Wing Cdr. Walbourncontinued to the target, which he reached on time. Whilst over the target much anti-aircraft ffire wasdirected at his aircraft. Nevertheless. Wing Cilr. Walbourn executed a straight and level bombingrun. The aircraft was hit many times in the fuselage end mainplane, but this pilot flew backto base. The success achieved'reflects the greatest credit on the skill and determination of this Flt.Lt. A. R. MOORE, D.F.C.. R A.F.V.R., No.56 Sqn.—Since the nward of (he Distinguished Flying Cross,, this officer has participated in ahuge number of operational sorties.
