An epicyclic reduction gear employing bevel wheels givesa ratio of 0.444 between crankshaft and airscrew shaft, the three planet wheels being carried on '' spoke '' stub armsoff the airscrew shaft and meshing with, and rotating against, the "sun" wheel (the foremost bevel) which issecured to the reduction gear casing. Input to the planets is through the rearmost bevel, whicfc is carried on the foreend of the crankshaft. The crankshaft is an interesting component of the three-section built-up type, with the front and rear sections secured to the crankpins of the centre section with manetonjoints, a form of construction pioneered by, and unique to, the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Big-end bearings on theHercules are of the type evolved by the company and used with such great success on the Pegasus and Perseus engines ;the bearings consist of white-metalled steel sleeves shrunk on to the crankpins, and superseded the earlier floatingtype bush some years ago. One of the main advantages of the special bearing is that periods between overhaulsare greatly extended. There are three main crankshaft bearings, housed in the rPOWER AT ALTITUDE POWER AT SEA LEVEL- ieoo 2000 ' MAXIMUM POWER TfAKE-OFF, SEA LEVEL " 5 MINUTE LIMIT. NORMAL CLIMb - RICH AUTO MIXTURE.
