BUILD, LEASE AND LEND : To accommodate the U.S.A.A.F. in BriUin, air- fields to the cost of £645,000,000 were constructed. Of this sum £605,000,000 • was borne by Britain. This picture of Snetterton Heath, in East Anglia, shows a typical airfield with three runways, the longest 2,000 yds. •, . THE KtNG haii been graciouslypleased to approve the lol*lowing awards ' - B.E.M. (Mil.) L.A/C R N. GARRED, R.A.F.V.R., and L.A/.C.S. W. READ, R.A.F.V.R.—These airmen were em- . • ployed continuously on minefield clearance at anairfield lor a period of six -weeks in 1944. They have been of the utmost assistance to the N'.C.O.in charge ol the section in his work of breaching minefields and locating and neutralising- mines. Both have been outstanding amongst about 25 air- men below the rank oi corporal who have beenengaged on the minefield and they have never hcfiuittd to perform work far beyond that whichcould be expected of them in view of their classi- fication and training. They luive shown koeunessand courage on work of a hazardous nature and have cotriniited much to the success which hasbeen achieved. L.A/C. P. CBO-WLEY, R.A.F.V.R., R.A.F.'Regi-ment,,—Alter the explosion of a bomb in January, 1945, this airman, assisted by a flight sergeant, crawled beneath a hugo piece ol reinforced con- crete which had fallen on top oi an officer. Theconcreto was precariously supported by loose bricks end rubble and was in imminent danger ol crush-ing L.A/C. Crowley as he worked beneath it. Failing to extricate the officer at the firstattempt, this airman made a further effort by burrowing under the concrete from the oppositesid;. The officer was later fouud to have died whilst the rescue attempts were being made andv.as extricated by .1 heavy rescue party, who cut throug'i the concrete. L.A/C Crowley made per-. sislent and gallant efforts to rescue the otlicer although he had set himself an impossible task.Ilia services were outstanding, even amongst other acts of gallantry displayed in connection withthis incident. L.A/C. F. F. SPBULE8. RA.F.V.R.—In Jnnuary,1945. a Fortress aircraft, in attempting to land at an at'field, crashed into a hangar. L.A/C.Sprulcs ran to the scene, where he assisted seven members of the crew to escape from the fnriouslyburning aircraft. Although the crew warned him that the aircraft was loaded with bombs, he con-tinued to help the injured. The bomb load (3.800 lb.l exploded about five minutes aiter hisarrival, showering debris around him but his only thought was for the men who needed medicalattention. He took some of the casualties to the sick quarters in a lorry which drove up tothe scene after the explosion had occurred, after- wards returning to the 6cene of the crash to giveany further help wiiich might be required. Until the arrival of many helpers after the explosion,L.A/C. Sprules had worked alone with courage, coolness and a complete disregard for his ownsafety. He was fully aware that a devastating explosion wa^ likely to .Occur. He was shockedby the concussion, but continued to render all, the issintancc he could in spite oi ammunitionwhich was exploding around him. Had it not been for his efforts it is probable that thefatalities would have been more numerous. la lact, only two ol the crew lost their lives.
