So FLIGHT JULY T9TH, 1945 aircraft, over a well-defended area and the NorthSea, safely back to the United Kingdom. At all times this officer has pressed home his attackswith determination and set an inspiring example by Ms gallantry, leadership and devotion to duty."Act Wing Cdr. C. F. MEBVYN-JONES, D.F.C., R.A.F-V.R., No. 104 Sqn.-Wing Cdr. Mervyn-Jones has- completed two tours of operational duty which have been distinguished by his enthu-siasm and skill as a pilot and his ability to imbue those serving undeT him with his own tinefighting spirit. In April, 1945, after a successful attack on the heavily defende.il railway Eidingsat Budapest this officer's aircraft was bacly damaged. Flying with great skill and shakingoff an attack" by an enemy fighter, he crossed the coast of Yug^lavia and.jWith his tanks almostdry be was forced down on to the sea, but was rescued the same day. A commander of resource,ability and courage, this officer has materially contributed to the successes attained by his D.F.C. ^FU,.™?.' J. W BARLING, D.F.C.. R.A.F.V.R., No224 Sqn.—This officer has completed two tours ol operational duty. During his first tour tieattacked and destroyed a U-boat in the Eastern Mediterranean. Since the award of tnhe has taken part in many operational corties, and has continued to displayoutstanding courage and devotion to duty. Fit. Lt. Barling sighted an enemysubmarine, which he immediately attacked; straddling it with five depth .charges. By dint of excellent co-operation four naval vessels were brought to thescene of the attack, and next morning wreckage and oil were collected fromthe area. Later, he sighted a U-boat near the French coast, but the U-boatscuttled herseli before an attack could be made. More recently this officer hasbeen flying on patrols over northern waters and off the Norwegian coast, and,on two occasions, has coiapleicd hi? mis- sion in the face oi persistent oppositionfrom enemy shore batteries. On another occasion he made a skilful attack on anenemy submarine. Through"nt a long operational career, Fit. Lt. Barling hasconsistently displayed outstanding keen- ness and skill.Group Captain K. II. .1. I'AHSOKS, D.F.C., R.A.A.F.-Gioup Cap'.. Parsonshas a,ft impressive war record, having participated ir more than 100 sorties.On one occasion, in February, 1945, his aircraft sustained severe damage andwent into a steep, uncontrollable dive. Only at the last possible moment didGroup Capt. Parsons get clear of the aircraft before it crashed. This gallantofficer was soon on operations again, and executed a successful surtie against Mis-burg. His last operational mission was an attack on Berehtesgaden. This officerhas invariably displayed the highest qualities of skill, courage and leadership,qualities which have inspired all. Lt. Col. G. C. KBITMMECK. S.A.A.F.—This officer has a splendid operational record, having participated in » verylarge number of sorties, during which a wide range of enemy target* have be^nattacked. Throughout, he has displayed unfailing devotion to duty, coupled witha high degree of skill and courage. In March, 1945, he led a formation of air-craft against, an ammunition dump near Margherita. The operation was well ex-ecuted, and caused much destruction amongst a cleverly camouflaged target.In April, 1945, this officer took part in an attack against a locomotive with 12roaches. In spite of strong opposing fire the attack was pressed home relentlessly.The taiget was set on fire. By hi6 skil- ful leadership and peisonal cnample ofbravery, Lt. Col. Krummeck contributed materially %to the successes obtained. Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross Fit. Lt. D. B. Ross, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R., No.427 (R.C.A.F.) Sqn.—Fit. Lt. Ross is now on his third tour of operational duty. Throughout hehas proved himself to be a skilful and determined air gunner On one occasion his aircraft was de-tailed to attack Cologne. One engine was rendered unserviceable and on leaving the target area anattack was made by a Messerschmitt 210. Fit. lit. Ross skilfully directed evasive action and, byhis accurate fire, drove off the enemy fighter. By his cool courage, efficiency and devolion tuduty over a long period he has set an outstanding example to all members of his squadron. fit. Lt. J. C. STEAD. D.F.C., R.A.F., No 192H(jn_—Since the award of the D.F.C. this navigator has almost completed a third tour of operationalduty. He has taken part iu attacks on many of the major targets in Europe. On all his missionshis conrage and skiit as a pilot have contributed much to the success obtained. Act. Fit. Lt. R. H. ANDERSON, D.F.C..R.A.F.V.R., No. 640 Sqn.—This officer has com- pleted numerous operational sorties, which haveincluded attacks against such heavily defended targets as Kiel. Duisburg and Dusseldorf. On oneoccasion, during a daylight attack on sterkrade. the ailerons of his aircraft were seriously damagedby anti-aircraft fire, which na.de it cttremely diffi- cult to control. Undeterred, Fit. Lt. Andereonpressed home a successful attack with the utmost determination and flew his aircraft safely back toit* base. In- his capacity as deputy flight com. Htftnrler this officer has shown a tireless energy andcheerful enthusiasm which have been an inspira- tion to ail in his squadron. SERVICE AVIATION Act Fit. Lt. J. W. BAGSHAW, D.F.C.,R.A.F.V.R., No. 582 Sqn.—Fit. Lt. Bagshaw has completed a large number of operational sorties,including attacks against such heavily defended targets as Berlin, Stettin, Stuttgart and Nurem-burg. By his consistent, skill and determination he has materially contributed to the successful com-pletion of many missions. Since the award of the D.F.C. this officer has continued to operate withcourage, enthusiasm and devotion to duty of the highest order. • Act. Fit. Lt. D. E. MILLER, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R.,No 7 Son.—This officer has shown himself to be a skilful and enthusiastic navigator. He hasparticipated in many further important opera- tional sorties since the award of the U.F.C. andhas played a large part in the successes achieved by his crew. His courage and determination inthe face of danger, together with kis cheerfulness The Duke of Gloucester practising at the stop buttsduring a visit to H.M.S. Nabberley, a Royal Naval Air Station on the East coast of Australia. and unfailing devotion to duly have alwaysmerited high praise. Act. Fit. Lt. D. J. ORAM, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R.,No. 617 Sqn.—This officer has completed numer- ous operational sorties and is now on i.is secondtour of operations. He has participated in attacks against many heavily defended targetsincluding five sorties against Berlin and two attacks against the Tirpits. He attacked indaylight such vital targets as Brest, Lorient and La Pallice. •Since the award of the D.F.C. hehas continued to maintain a high standard of leadership, courage and devotion to duty whichhave wou the admiration and confidence of all his crew. Act. Fit. Lt. D A. SHAW, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R.,No. 550 Sqn.—Throughout an extended tour of operations. Fit. Lt. Shaw has proved himself tobe a skilful pilot and a gallant captain ol air craft. He hag taken part in attacks on a widevariety of targets, ranging from heavily defended industrial areas to tactical objectives in Franceand the Low Countries. His example tf courage and determination, has been an inspiration tothe entire squadron- Act. Fit. Lt. J. WOULD, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R.,No. 97 Sqn.—As air bomber. Fit. Lt. Would has completed a large number of sorties, many ofwhich have penetrated deeply into enemy terri- tory with excellent results. When his crew hadcompleted its tour of duty, this officer volun- teered to remain with the squadron and flew onoperations when even a spare crew member was required. His experience and tenacity nave beeninvaluable and his calmness under fire a source of confidence to his crew. During two importantmissions to Darmstadt and Karlsruhe, Fit. Lt. Would, by his skill and accuracy contributedmuch to the success obtained. F/O. J. W, G. EATON, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R., No.105 Sqn.—F/O. Eaton has completed a large number oi operational missions since the awardof the D.F.C. These have included attacks against a wide range of strongly defended targets.Throughout all these operations he has displayed outstanding courage and cool judgment, togetherwith great tenacity of purpose and noteworthy airmanship. Despite enemy opposition, ne hasalways shown the utmost determination to com- plete his mission successfully. By his consistentlysuccessful operational record he has set, an excel- lent example to other pilots. F/O. P. S. HOBBS, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R., No. 608Sqn.—F/O. Hobbs has displayed great courage and gallantry as a navigator during a large num-ber of operational missions. lie has always executed his allotted task with efficiency and cool-ness, even in the race of the' heaviest defences.
