- IO Advertisements. FLTGHT Jury 26TH, 1945 lb. wise or £ foolish This idea that metal aircraft need no surface protection is one of those deceptive half truths. In war, as a means to justify an end, it is admissible if it saves man-hours in production, if it enables a bomber crew to carry a few more pounds of military load or if it increases range by a few miles, because the lifetime of a Service aircraft is a minor consideration. In air transport the position is quite different. If flying stock is to earn its keep and to repay its purchase price every aircraft must give long service with economy in maintenance. Longevity can only be ensured by adequate protection of all surfaces against the corrosive effects of atmosphere, the extremes of temperature and the strains of high speed flight. A few pounds saved in tare weight does not outweigh the great expense of extra maintenance and lost operating time which soon besets the unfinished aircraft. Every good aircraft deserves the protection of a light weight Titanine finish and the magnetism of its distinguished appearance.
