Whennfiaring the target the aircraft wag hit by anti- aircraft tire. Sgt. Bowers waa severely wtiundedin the leg. In spite ol this he remained at his post. Almost immediately another shell burstunderneath the aircraft and fausod extensive damage. The bomb bay was wrecked. A firestarted and the fuselage became filled with smoke. The airciaft began to lose height and it seemedus though it would have to be abandoned, but F/O. Jlampson succeeded in regaining uuiitrol.Just then the aircraft was agaiu hit. Sgt. Bowers sustained further injury. His leg was almostsevered. Whilst F/0. Hampson was taking evasive action. Fit. Sgts. Mann and Reynoldswent to the assistance of their badly wounded comrade lo whom first-aid was given. After-wards they did everything possible to assist their pijot anif captain in bis endeavour to fly thecrippled aircraft homo. Grievously wounded as he was, Sgt. Bowers also fully determined to beuF assistance. After dragging himself nearer to the instrument panel he kept his pilot adviseduf the fuel position and gave dirertions regarding ihe changing of the respective fuel tanks. FinallyJ7O. Ilampson reached an airfield. The bomb doors were open. The hydraulic gear and theliaps were unserviceable. Nevertheless, the under- carriage was lowered by means -of the emergencysystem and F,o.
