AUGUST 23RD, 1945 197 These photographs, taken by Mr. John Yoxall, give a very excellent idea of the manoeuvrability of the Hawker Tempest II in the hands ofMr. Humhle. They show well the lines of the machine from many points of view, and bringoiit the close similarity between it and the Tempest V. The neat and close cowling aroundthe Bristol Centaurus radial engine gives an appearance of low drag. With flaps and undercarriage down theTempest II does not look quite so sleek. "Vertical bank" is a term often based upon faulty observation. In the picture on the left there can be no argument that the Tempest was well past the vertical as it swung behind the photo-graphic machine. In the upper left-hand picture onthe opposite page, Mr. W. Humble appears pleased with the formatingof the photographic machine. It Must certainly have been close. In the other two pictures he gave the photographer some good viewsof both upper and underside of the machine.
