R.A.F.V.R., NO. 101 Sqn.dttji i 1 neeler was flight engineer in an aircraft w»ed lo attack the heavily defended target oi GERMAN JUNK : Finding a use (if any) for the hundreds of captured Germanaircraft must be quite a problem for the R.A.F. This photograph shows a row of Me no's abandoned in Norway. Bremen in March. 1945. Whilst over the targetarea the aircraft was hit and damaged by enemy fire. Sgt. Wheeler was seriously wounded in thethigh. Although in great pain this resolute air- man concealed the fact until well clear of thetarget. After receiving attention, he insisted on being allowed to carry on with his duties. Twoof the starboard engines had sustained slight damage, but, so well did this engineer fulfil histasks that his captain was enabled to have full use oi the four engines throughout the homewardflight. In spite of much physical distress, Sgt. Wheeler displayed outstanding devotion to duty, setting a splendid example to all. This airman has completed a large number of sorties and hasinvariably displayed a high degree of skill. Fit. Sgt. (J. B. FERGUSON, R.A.A.F., 466(R.A.A.F.) Sqn.—This airman was the mid-upper gunner in an aircraft detailed to attack Essenone night in February, 1945. When approaching the target much anti-aircraft fire was encountered.Fit. Sgt. Ferguson was struck in the face by a piece of shrapnel which crashed through thePerspex screen round his gun turret. He had sustained a moBt serions wound. Nevertheless,he would not distract his captain. Making light o! his condition, Fit. Sgt. Ferguson assured himthat he did not require assistance. Another mem- ber of the crew went to investigate, but this bravegunner kept on his oxygen mask to prevent his comrade from seeing the extent of his injuriesand reiterated that he was not in need of help. Throughout the bombing run Fit. Sgt. Fergusonremained at his post. When over Allied territory on the way home the captain once more calledto his gunner. Owing to congealed blood in the microphone of his mask, Fit. Sgt. Ferguson wasunable to reply. The wireless operator was promptly sent to his assistance. When taken fromhis gun turret and his mask removed, Fit. Sgt. Ferguson's injuries were fully disclosed. A pieceof shrapnel, some two inches long, was embedded in his cheek. His upper jaw had been fractured.Several teeth had been knocked out. His face was very badly swollen and the right eye wascompletely closed. He was suffering intensely. First aid was given at once. Soserious was his condition that the captain brought the aircraftdown at an airfield in Allied ter ritory so that his brave -comradecould receive the medical atten- tion he so urgently needed. Fit.Sgt. Ferguson set a magnificent example of courage, self-sacrificeand devotion to duty.
