MARCH 14TH, 1946 FLIGHT =59 _, c-r. C-. THE HOLD IT ! Bruce Parker, U.S.water-ski champion, at Jones Beach, New York, enjoys amile-a-minute ride behind a Luscombe. He starts behind afast motor boat and transfers, at speed, to the plane's tow-rope. Showing the Roundels A SERIES of long-distance trainingflights by the R.A.F. to theDominions, India, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Far East arenow being arranged, it was stated by Mr. John Strachey, Under-Secretary for Air,in the House last week. Several aircraft may take part in some of these flights. This was in reply to Sir Wavell Wake- field, who suggested that, in view of thesuccess of the Aries' flight to South Africa, similar flights by several aircraftinstead of only one should be made else- where. Quarts from Pint Pots TXR. CECIL GORDON, who has just •*--' been recruited to the Board of Trade to help in the drive for more and more exports (and, dare we hope, one of two little things for home use, too?) was the man who showed Coastal Command howto double its anti-U-boat patrols without any increase in available aircrews orequipment, by the application of scien- tific methods to the various operationalproblems involved. There is no reason to doubt that themethods so successfully applied in opera- tional research for the R.A.F. during thestress of war can be equally well applied to the vital task of industrial and econ-omic reconstruction. Nothing NewR ADAR, though a new developmentto mankind, is a very old technique to that homely little creature, the bat. This was mentioned by Mr. J. M. A. Leniham when he read a paper, '' ThePrinciples and Application of Radar," before the Scottish Engineering Students'Association at Glasgow recently. The bat avoids collision with obstacles WINGED AIR TUNNEL is the nick-name given to this Republic XP-84 jet-propelled fighter which recently completed initial flight tests at Muroc Field, California. The single axial-flow G.E. unit with nose intake permits very clean lines,as these two views of the aircraft show to advantage in the dark by sending out sound signalsat a frequency above the limit of human audibility, and picks up the reflectionfrom any opaque object in the vicinity, the direction and intensity of the echotelling him what avoiding action to take. This, of course, has been proved ex-perimentally when it was discovered, for example, that if a bat's ears wereplugged it became unable to avoid obstacles in its path. Surely Not First Again? HPHE U.S. Navy has " recently dis--1- closed" that the first, though un- premeditated, landing by a jet-poweredaircraft on a carrier deck was made by a Ryan Fireball on November 6th last. The landing was being made using the Fireball's conventional radial engine, butthis faded out during the approach and the pilot started up his jet unit to com-plete the operation successfully. • The first normal landing on a carrierby a purely jet-powered aircraft was made by a D.H. Vampire on December 3rd,as described'in Flight, December 13th. Gas-turbine LocosP LANS for a gas-turbine locomotive, based an aircraft experience, are under consideration by the GreatWestern Railway, it was announced by Lord Portal, the G.W.R. chairman, atthe company's annual meeting at Pad- dington last week. Later, an official of the G.VV.R.assured a Press representative that " gas-turbine locomotives are still in theexperimental stage," and he went on to say that it would be at least 18 monthsbefore the turbine units would be available. There is, of course, nothing new- inthe idea itself An experimental gas- turbine locomotive has been running inSwitzerland for several years, and plans are well ahead in America to produceanother experimental prototype. Helicopter School "PHE first of its kind, the Coast Guard-L Helicopter School at Floyd Bennett Field, N.Y., is one of the few Servicetraining schools in America which has shown no sign of curtailing operationssince the end of the war. This school was founded in April, 1944'
