WAR COMMANDERS Air Marshal Sir W. Alec Coryton AIR MARSHAL SIR WILLIAM ALKCCORYTON. K.B.E., CO., M.V.O.,D.F.C., is Controller of Aircraft Supplks to the Ministry of Supply, and, as such, is amember oi the Air Council. With tin; centralization in that .Ministry of all aviationresearch and development. Sir Alec's task is by no means an enviable one. He should,however, be well fitted for it by virtue ul his long and wide service experienceboth at honu and overseas. He was educated at Eton andKing's College, Cambridge, but left the latter to take a commission as a2nd Lt. in the 8th (Service) Battalion of the Rifle Brigade in September,1914. He transferred to the Royal Air Force when it was formed in lgi6.In 1920 he became a flying instructoi at the R.A.F. College and, later thesame year, was posted to >.'o. 31 Squadron in India. He was awardedthe D.F.C. in 1922 for his services in Waziristan. Coryton remained inIndia for a considerable period, and from 1925 until 1931 was at the Schoolof Army Co-operation, becoming for a time its Chief Instructor. When he returned to this country,he held Air Staff posts, first at Air Ministry and then at Headquarters,Coastal Area. In 1935 he was again posted overseas, this time to Head-quarters, Iraq, to undertake special duties at Mosul. In 1937, he com-pleted a course at the Royal Naval Staff College at -Greenwich. Upon the outbreak of war, Corytonbecame Director of Operations (Over- seas) at Air Ministry with the rank ofAir Commodore, and he continued' in this post during the critical earlyyears of the war until, in 1942, he was given the command of No. 5 Group,Bomber Command. In 1943, he went out to Headquarters, R.A.F., MiddleEast, as Senior Air Staff Officer with the rank of Air Vice-Marshal, butlater that year was brought back to join Air Ministry Air Staff once again,this time as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations). In August, 1942, he was granted therank oi Air Marshal-and the command of 3rd Tactical Air Force, Air Com- mand, South-l'nst AM,1, and in January lastyear became AsMsunir Air Commander to • the East Air Command, South-East Asia, anappointment which carried with it the com- mand of the Royal Air Force in lVugal andBurma. Later in the year, nt tlii- age oi 50, Sir Alec was again brought back to thiscountry to take over the post of Controller of Research and .Development at M.A.P.
