Substantial progress has been made in the development of the 18-cylinder CENTAURUS sleeve-valve engine, and as yet it has far from reached its peak. Initially released with a quoted power of "over 2,500 B.H.P.", the CENTAURUS is now available, in Marks 57 and 58, with a take-off power of 2,800 B.H.P. The altitude performance of these engines is equally impressive, their high-efficiency superchargers enabling them to maintain a maximum power of over 2,100 B.H.P. at 20,000 ft.More important still, for long range civil and military aircraft, is their exceptional economy in fuel and oil. They give a continuous cruising power at maximum r.p.m. on weak mixture of 1,535 B.H.P. at 21,250 ft., fora fuel consumption of only 0.455 lb/B.H.P./hr. At lower cruising speeds this is further reduced to 0.415 lb/B.H.P./hr. The average figure for oil consumption at maximum cruising r.p.m. is 10 pints an hour, which falls to about 4 pints an hour at lower r.p.m. THE BRISTOL AEROPLANE COMPANY LIMITED s I.,
