\ Development With two 2,600 h.p. Napier Sabres installed even such asober aircraft as the Vickers Warwick feels the joy of life.Annular radiator installations and long exhaust pipes arenoteworthy. The top speed is over 300 knots. mtal Establishment at dt Activities ihotoiraphs but one or two achievements are par-ticularly worthy of description. During a recent visit to Luton, Flight represen-tatives were able to see the results oi the latest researches and examine otherwork in hand. Included was the annu- lar radiator installation for the Tempestand similar experimental installations in a Warwick; the ground and airborneversions of the Napier-designed ignition tester ; automatic camera recorders ; and,of a rather different nature, destruction and stiffness tests on a Sabre enginemounting as developed for the Fire- brand ; photographic determination ofposition errotv and a momentum-type air cleaner produced for the Typhoon.A particularly interesting story con- cerns the air cleaner. Advance air-strips in Normandy were cut with bull- dozers, and exposed earth without anydressing formed the surface. In dry weather the dust clouds were found tocontain more abrasive grit than anything previously experienced, even in NorthAfrica, and no provision had been made for engine intake niters. As a result ofexcessive sleeve wear it eventually be- came necessary to ground Typhoons, anda S O S for a supply of temporary filters was sent to the Napier branch at Lutonas an interim measure, pending receipt of f acrobatic capabilities of the Hawker Tempest when powered by a Mk. VI Sabre engine with annular radiator installation.
