22 Advertisements. FLIGHT SEPTEMBER 12TH, 19 '" What's £fr trouble?" " He wants to know why it takes all that petrol to get him there by air." "Yes?" ** Wants to know if we realise that by picking up our fuel on the way we could carry three times as many passengers in the same liner." "Mmrn !" " Wants to know why we don't do something about it and get our fares down to a reasonable figure." " You know, somebody's been telling that chap about Flight Refuelling." * * Extract from " Flight "—issue dated 20.9.45. " An aircraft designed for long-distance operation must carry a vast quantity of fuel, probably three or four times the weight of payload. This in turn requires a considerable weight of structure to carry the fuel load, which in turn calls for powerful engines andhigh fuel consumption. By halving the fuel weight, the engine and structural weight components are drastically reduced also. Conversely, if the size of the airliner isunchanged, but the quantity of fuel is halved (by refuelling in flight), the payload may be doubled or trebled."
