MAY 5TH, 1947 FLIGHT SERVICE AVIATION vious missions were flown. U.S. of S. on RecruitingO PENING the R.A.F. Mobik- Inhibi-tion at Marylebone Station on April 25th, Mr. Geoffrey de Freitas, M.I'.,Under-Secretary of State for Air, said: — "Recruiting for the R.A.F. to-day isfetter than It has ever been before. That ^-fs not a hope, that is a fact. We have seta high standard for regulars, and ut are going to keep to it. We won't take any-body and everybody. But there is room for keen young men who are not alraidof having to do a real job. There is room for both the skilled and the unskilled. " These exhibitions, which will travelby road and rail throughout the King- dom, will show something of the jobs tobe done in the R.A.F., of the good life in tt^ R.A.F., and of the possibility ofcarrying on in civil life with a trade learned in the Service. In these exhibi-tions there are machines which answer questions about the R.A.F. If we canget coupons for a dark suit to fit one of these machines we shall try it out in theHouse of Commons at question time." The U.-S. of S. spoke again, in thefollowing terms, at the annual dinner of the new Edgware Branch of the BritishLegion on April 26th:— '' The Royal Air Force is a youngService and relies principally on young men. But we have room for the over-40's. We have changed our Bounty regu- lations so that we can benefit from theexperience of those who are beginning to be a little thin on top.'' There is a big difference from the 36 HOURS AFLOAT : An R.A.F. airborne rescue launch was lately dropped intothe Channel from a Lancaster of No. 203 Squadron, St. Eval. New Survey Technique AFTER trials over small areas in theUnited Kingdom and successful em- ployment in West Africa last year, theR.A.F. has adopted a new aerial survey technique, employing radar control ofthe photographic aircraft. The lessons learnt in West Africa will be applied toa survey shortly to be made in East Africa. This will include areas of im-portance to the Colonial Governments concerned and at the request of theMinistry of Food, a region to be used for the groundnuts scheme. Nearly the whole aiea flooded by theThames, Great Ousc, Yorkshire Ousc and Medway has been photographed bythe R.A.F., and some units, on behalf of the Ministry of Works, have been in-structed during the course of their train- ing to photograph a number of ancientmonuments, castles and Roman ramps. Last year the Service photographed580,000 sq miles in ilie Uiitish Isles, Europe, the Middle East, India, the FarEast and West Africa.
