MAY 8TH, 1947 TO KEEP YOU a monthly digest of news from aero-engine divisionthe J T NEW SERIES OF HERCULES CIVIL ENGINES Important developments in design and construction mark the introduction of a new series of Hercules engines in the 2000 B.H.P. class for civil aircraft. The Hercules 730, 731, 732 and 733 are engines with single-speed superchargers, primarily for medium- altitude operation. They differ from each other only in minor installational details. The Hercules 760, 761, 762 and 763 have two-speed superchargers, and special auxiliary drives for cabin pressurising equipment, and are, therefore, particularly suitable for high altitude services. Performance data and specifications will be supplied on request. NEW CYLINDER ASSEMBLY One ol the major design features of these new Hercules engines is the improved cylinder assembly, and in particular the composite type cylinder head, with copper base and steel top. Due to its greatly superior heat dissipation qualities compared with the previous aluminium type, the new head permits a substantial increase in B.M.E.P., without incurring any penalty in cooling drag. The cylinder barrels have been strengthened and are machined from aluminium alloy forgings produced by an improved process. The number of studs securing them to the crankcase has also been increased. CRANKCASE CHANGES The crankcase has been modified for increased strength and to accommodate new crankshaft main bearings of considerably increased load capacity. IMPROVED SUPERCHARGER The supercharger in the Hercu.'es 760 series has an improved form of two-speed drive, with epicyclic gears and non-rotating piston type hydraulic clutches. Certain servicing requirements of the previous two- speed supercharger are thereby eliminated. -.,..... lie new Hercules Cylinder Assembly THE BRISTOL AEROPLANE COMPANY LIMITED BRISTOL - ' -• ENGLAND Printed in Great Britain for the Proprietors, FLIGHT PUBLISHING COMPANT LnuTEi), Uorset House, Stamford Street, London, S.E.1, by THS (JORMWALL PSJSSS LTD., 1-6, Paris Garden, Lonuon, a-"Flight" can be obtained abroad from the following : AUSTRALIA and NKW ZBALAND : Gordon & Gotch Ltd.
