JUNE 19TH, 1947 a tnonthly digest of news frown the TjYUbCoL aero-engine division j T POWER AT ALTITUDE WITH FUEL ECONOMY The first aero engine to be put into production with a gear-driven supercharger was the Bristol Jupiter of 1927. Since that time, Bristol engines have not only continued in the forefront of progress in power output at altitude, but have been distinguished by their combination of this characteristic with an exceptional degree of fuel economy. Due largely to the greater scope for development offered by the sleeve-valve cylinder design, and to the introduction of a special system of fuel metering and injection, the advances made during the past five years have been particularly outstanding. The accompanying graph shows that the current Hercules 632 civil engine, which has a single-speed supercharger, gives more power at all altitudes for lean-mixture cruising than its two-speed military predecessor of 1942, the Hercules XVI. At 10,000 ft., the power increase is about 24%. The specific fuel consumption of the Hercules 632 at maximum lean mixture cruising power at this height is only 0.425 lb/ B.H.P./hr; an improvement of about 3% on the already low figure for the earlier engine. The fuel is 100/130 grade in both cases. The sketch shows the general arrangement of the single-speed supercharger of the Hercules 630 and 730 series. Its leading features are high efficiency achieved by advanced aerodynamic design (especially in the turbine-type entry to the impellor) combined with mechanical simplicity and robustness without undue weight. As already announced, a version of this supercharger with an improved form of two-speed drive, is used in the new Hercules 760 series of high-altitude civil engines. ,-.._- 2. Entry fa 3. Impeller 4.
