I Aircraft for Czechoslovakia "N accordance with an agreement signed. at Prague on February 19th, the British Government is to provide Czecho-slovakia with aircraft and equipment. Three fighter squadrons totalling 72Spitfires, a fighter-bomber squadron of 24 Mosquito Vis, and -a communicationflight of three Austers and one Anson, are among the aircraft destined forCzechoslovakia. Some of these machines have already been delivered, and the re-mainder are to be sent as soon as pos- sible. • Award AT a special investiture ceremony atthe American Embassy on Monday, August 18th, Dr. H. Designed and built for the A.A.F., the machine carries two crew and three passengers, or alternatively one crew, two litters and one attendant. It has a top speed of 105 m.p.h. Getting the Bird '"THE Air Ministry is considering a plan•*• to use pedigree falcons to keep R.A.F. ^airfields free from wild birdswhich, in some areas, are a constant danger to aircraft. In charge of train-ing the falcons is Mr. Ronald Stephens, of Shropshire, who during the wartrained falcons to hunt and kill enemy carrier pigeons. The A.M. makes it clearthat should the scheme come into opera- tion the falcons will not be used to huntand kill wild birds but only to dis- courage them by their presence. Flying Beaver '"PHE Canadian de Havilland Beaver•»- (D.H.C2), an illustration of which was published in our issue of May 22nd,made its first flight on August 16th, piloted by W/'C. Russell Bannock. De-signed specifically for the Canadian bush operator, the Beaver should be a usefultype in many other parts of the world. Rescue by Glider rpXPERIMENTS are now being con- -*-•' ducted in America with a glider life- boat designed for the U.S. Coast Guard for use in air/sea rescue operations. The idea is that the "boat," which is de- signed as a glider with detachable wings and tail unit would be towed behind a search aircraft and upon sighting the sea disaster it would cast off, land on the sea, detach its wings and tail unit and then operate as a normal motor boat.
