FLIGHT SOVIET AVU New Military 4/rc7 "THROUGHOUT the U.S.S.R. Sunday, August 3rd -*- celebrated as Aviation Day. On these pages Flip • able to present, exclusively, a series of photograph*t ing some interesting new Service aircraft and illustr the high standard of formation flying attained Soviet instructors. The display was held at Tushina airfield in the presence of Generalise! Stalin, and new types which appeared included! aircraft designed by Yakolev, Lavochj Mikoyan, Gurevich, Sukhoy, Ilyushin J Tupolev. Apart from the four-engined 72-sf Ilyushin transport illustrated, a thyfi^ 67-seater is reported to have put !&<Hp, ance. Helicopters designed by Ivan Brat'5 took off and landed in spaces of 100 sq. - At top left is a formation of new twin-engined transports—probably IL-12s—which are succeeding the Russian-built version of the DC-3, known as the PS-84. The Soviet Star is formed by PO-2 f trainers, designed by N. Polika/pov and flowr by * „ instructors, and Stalin's name is spelt out by what * are stated to be UT-2 trainers, though it is obvious that two types of aircraft are engaged. The wing of the new four-engined llyushin 67-seater trans port (lower centre) resembles that of the Super fortress and Stratocruissr. This modern typs headed a fly-past of tromport aircraft.
