OCTOBER 16TH tg47 simplicity of principle The single sleeve has been recognised for some thirty-eight years as the simplest possible .-_ valve mechanism for the four-stroke petrol engine. Its application to the high-performance aero engine, pioneered by " Bristol" in 1927, has been an epic achievement in engineering skill, persistence and ingenuity. The initial difficulties were great, but the subsequent benefits immense. Top overhauls are eliminated. Servicing of cylinder assemblies is limited to the cleaning and re-setting of sparking plugs at 200 hours. Engine overhaul is considerably simplified by the reduction in the number of parts, and because the sleeve mechanism is very easily dismantled and re-assembled, no subsequent timing adjustment is required. Hercules and Centaurus sleeve-valve engines power the majority of civil aircraft in current production ... an acknowledgment of their high reliability resulting from the simplicity of the single sleeve-valve principle.
