NOVEMBER 13TH, 1947 FLIGHT 563 SERVICE ATION GLORIOUS DEVON : Handsome in its Service markings is a D.H. Devon C. / communications aircraft, some details of which appear on this page. R.A.F. Appointment THE Air Ministry announces the ap-pointment of A.V-M. Gerard Combe,C.B., as Senior Air Staff Officer, R.A.F. Mediterranean and Middle East Com- mand, with effect from October 30th. A.V-M. Combe has been Director- General of Armament at the Air Ministry since February, 1945, and was former at the Ministry of Aircraft Production, as Director of Armament Develop from January, 1944. Previously for nearly eighteen months Comgign'dant of the Chemical Defenoff Bgperimental Station, to which he \*en*'m August, 1942, after having/pefen vice-president of the Ordnance BoarcP-from January of Royal Air Force and Naval Aviation News and Announcements 3.1 and Royal Air Force Member the Ordnance Committee from 'October, 1940. Soon after the outbreak of war he went to France on armament duties with the A.A.S.F. The Jolliffe TrophyM R. GEOFFREY DE FREITAS,, M.P., Under-Secretary of State for Air, presented the Jolliffe silver challengeophv for the best dining halls in the .A.r. to No. 49 Maintenance Unit atthe R.A.F. (P) ). Harry Arbick, °-B-£., R.C.N.(R), has re-entered the Royal Canadian Navy (Reserve) and has been appointed Deputy Director of the Haval Air Division. Photo^aphic Interpreters ' ,«•* ONCE again W.A.A.F. officers are tobe trained for photographic interpre- tation duties. Those who have know- ledge of their work in this connection during the war will especially welcome this announcement. Operational tech- nique and methods will continue to be studied but many new applications of photo-interpretation have been brought about by the peacetime commitments of the R.A.F. The trained Service photo- interpreter should be in demand in civil lite. The Devon C.I. T7OURTEEN principal differences dis- -^ tinguish the de Havilland Devon C.i communications aircraft for the Royal Air Force from the commercial D.H. Dove. These are: (i) Installation of V.H.F. T.R. 1920 radio, and revised COMMONWEALTH CO. : Wing Com- mander C. W. K. Nicholls, D.S.O., O.b.E., a New Zealander, who commands No. 24 Commonwealth Squadron at Bassingbourne. Squadron members (including "Mac," also in the picture) come from all parts of the Empire.
